I have been involved in the world of dance, music and art since I was a child. Eventually I had to decide what I was going to focus on, so my dance and art worlds merged. I transplanted the movement of the body onto paper. The music and dance exploded with calligraphic line combined with watercolor and pastels. It is truly ironic that I became a photographer, because I was told that I had to stay away from darkroom as I am extremely allergic to the chemicals. But as fate should have it, while I was supervising food photography shoots, a printer happened to see some negatives of mine and asked if he could enlarge them for me. It opened up another world for me and suddenly I was exhibiting. Previously I had shown my watercolors and pastels; now photography took over. That was 20 years ago.
I have approached composing my photographs in the same manner as my painting. Only this time the camera is my brush. I look for strong compositions, movement and contrasting textures. I am fond of panoramas but I’m much more interested in creating a smaller composition that pulls you into the picture. I look for the tension between negative and positive space. This creates drama.
My energy poured into my paintings and I feel the same as with my photos it’s just with a sharper lens. You are seeing the world through my eyes, looking at my lines, movement, angles and space. I am my artwork. |
