My paintings are influenced by the works of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist; including Renoir, Monet, Serat, and Degas. Other influences include the works of the Modernist, among them Pollock, De Kooning, and Picasso. Therefore, my paintings are stylistically Representational, Abstract, and Impressionist.
The featured paintings in my most recent exhibition, Dec. 2005 to Jan. 2006 were part of a series entitled, “Nature’s Wonder, Nature’s Splendor.” They represent my current fascination with the beauty and multiplicity found in nature. Within the last three years or so, landscapes and nature themes have been a major focus of my paintings. Particularly, birds and water. Elements that to my way of thinking represent freedom and lack of constraints--both in the physical and metaphysical, as well as psychologically. These currently represent my search for inner truth and self-actualization.
The majority of my paintings are influenced by my moods and thus are self-reflective, which in turn has an influence on my choice of palette. The use and variation of thinly applied colors and how these colors relate to each other represent dialogues of corresponding images, which resonate with me, seemingly wanting to jump forth from the canvas, of their own volition. My use of iridescent colors represent wisdom and enlightenment and the literal and whimsical possibilities that are revealed when the paintings are viewed from different angles and perspectives, as a result of interacting light and shadow striking the canvas. I often incorporate images in my paintings, which seemingly appear and disappear before the viewer. Transition is therefore another fundamental narrative element in my paintings.
Spanish is my native language (I was born in the Dominican Republic), and as such, I often include the Spanish subtitles of my works, or the reverse (English subtitles). My bi-cultural heritage is thus also an integral influence in my paintings.
For the past five years, I have utilized acrylics as my sole medium of expression. Encaustic paints, oils, drawing, and black and white photography are other mediums, with which I express myself. |
