Artist Statement
My current body of work, "RelationShifts" represents a move toward greater
abstraction even as my personal connection to this work is stronger. I begin with
a fairly symmetrical grid and proceed to establish a dialogue with each of the elements
that form the pattern.
The rigidness of the grid offers an anchoring safety net while also inviting rebellion.
Through a layering process each element will transform and possibly abandon
their original place in the grid. The dynamic among all the players-layers is always
changing. The restraints of the grid are further reinforced as I limit my materials
primarily to white gesso and black chalkboard paint which, in fact, provide an infinite
range of subtle possibility.
